Built in 1883 as a retirement home for sailors, the 83-acre site features five landmarked Greek Revival buildings - the largest collection of this style structure in the United States. Within their columned facades are museums, New York City's second oldest concert hall, and art galleries.
The surrounding grounds feature a network of gardens, including natural woodlands and 20 distinct gardens. Visitors can explore Victorian elegance in the White Garden or amble through the site's hedge maze in the Secret Garden. You can watch Monarchs and Painted Ladies fluttering in the Butterfly Garden or get a taste of Italy in the Tuscan Garden. The Garden of Healing, dedicated to the men and women lost in the attacks on September 11, 2001, provides a soothing retreat and a beautiful place to heal.

b - The Visitor's Center is home to Snug Harbor Cultural Center's traditional exhibition programs. The Harbor's affiliation with the Smithsonian Institute has created an unprecedented opportunity for the development of fine arts shows and programs through institutional loans and curatorial consultation.
c - The New York Chinese Scholar's Garden is the only authentic classical Scholar's Garden in the United States. Reflecting 18th and 19th century Ming Dynasty garden design, this one-acre retreat was hand-crafted by artisans from Suzhou City and feature plants indigenous to China. Soothing waterfalls and quiet walkways help to create an atmosphere that is serene and calming, an old-world respite from hectic modern life. The garden opened to international acclaim in 1999.

d - The Tuscan Garden and Villa is modeled after the exquisite Villa Gamberaia in Florence. Designed by an international team that included Florence's leaving preservation architect, the Garden and amphitheatre will be a showplace for plays, programs, and concerts celebrating Italian culture. The Villa will showcase changing exhibits on Italian artwork, design and horticulture. In addition, programs on Italian language, cuisine, music, and seasonal festivals will also be offered.

e - The Neptune Fountain is a symbol of Snug Harbor's maritime heritage. Dating from 1893, this beautiful bronze statue is on display in the Visitor's Center while a recast version watches over the site's front lawn.
